Christian Munthe
Born in 1962, I received
my ph.d. in practical philosophy at Stockholm
University in 1993. The subject of my dissertation was the moral status of
abortion - it is available for free download! Later, I have published
books on the ethical aspects of Prenatal
Diagnosis and Preimplantation
Genetic Diagnosis, and is currently completing a new book on the ethical basis of
the precautionary principle. After three and a half years as Senior Researcher
at the Centre for Research Ehics in Gothenburg (now defunct) and nearly
seven years as associate professor of practical philosophy at the Department of
Philosophy at the University of Gothenburg and (from 2004) Professor of
Practical Philosophy of that Department (including being department head
2006-2008) I now hold the same position at the newly formed Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory
of Science at the University of Gothenburg, being also Vice chair
responsible for research. I was an appointed member of the Swedish National Council for Medical Ethics from 2000 to 2006, and
am currently a member of the International
Association of Bioethics, the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in
Göteborg, and The
Hinxton Group - An International Consortium on Stem Cells, Ethics & Law. I have a broad interest
in philosophy, especially ethics and political philosophy. My speciality (if I
can be said to have any) is applied ethics. Besides my academic and family
life, I also keep myself busy as a musician within the field of free improvised
and experimental music.
