ANN in information intensive health care

 Svenska, tack!

Beginning in 1998, a number of cross-scientific research projects are running which have their center at the Department of Philosophy, Gothenburg University (GU) and involve several medical departments and clinics in Göteborg and other research groups in Sweden and Great Britain. The name of the overarching project is Artificial Neural Networks in information intensive health care. The project is run by the ANNIMAB Society. This group is headed by Helge Malmgren (Philosophy, GU) together with Björn Haglund (Philosophy, GU), Lars Lindström (Clinical Physiology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital), Martin Rydmark (MEDNET, GU) and Holger Wigström (Medical Biophysics, GU). Among the partners on the medical side are also the departments of Diagnostic Radiology, Neuroscience and Physiology, Lung Medicine and Surgery at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Linkoping University and InferSpace, London also participate.

In the specific projects, applications using so-called artificial neural networks (ANN) and related "learning" methods are developed in selected medical problem areas where the amount and kind of available data require unconventional approaches. Examples are automatic volumetry of the hippocampus from MRI data, automatic detection of emphysema and decision support in acute abdominal pain. We are also working with ANN models of the human brain, for example in perception and memory. An earlier project plan about prediction and control in neurosurgical intensive care has not been implemented because of lack of funding. The projects have up til now been funded mainly by The Foundation for Knowledge and Competence Development (KK-stiftelsen), The Swedish Resarch Council (VR), The Swedish Federation of County Councils and Region Västra Götaland.

It has also been part of the project to organise an international conference on the use of artificial neural networks in medicine and biology. This conference, ANNIMAB-1, took place in Gothenburg on Saturday May 13, to Tuesday May 16, 2000.
